Funicular without railway tracks
When, in the 1930s, winter tourism showed the first signs of taking off with the emergence of ski lifts, Arnold Annen in the Bernese Saanenland region invented a funicular installation featuring steerable sledges running in opposite directions. These open sledges (later cabins) were attached to a thick cable and ascended and descended along the tracks they made in the snow. These so-called “funis” without railway tracks gave whole groups of skiers access to the slopes. For a while, probably in excess of 30 of these funis were in operation in Switzerland alone, serving the needs of the nascent ski tourism industry.
With thanks to Gstaad Saanenland Tourism, Bergbahnen Destination Gstaad AG, numerous donors and Ruth Annen, the inventor’s grand-daughter, for her tireless efforts
